The Paradox In Their Core Principles

There are very distinct differences that may not be as intuitive as people may think in what makes a team great defensively. At the highest level there are so many different tactics, formations, concepts, etc. that teams use. There is no right way or wrong style or structural preference as long as they follow certain principles. These principles are:

  1. Maximize spatial control in key areas
  2. Be very good at being broken
  3. Adjust to accommodate the conditions of each phase

These are the three things that I think are a mark of a great team defensively. The reason why it seems like a paradox is because being good defensively isn’t often associated with the opponent bypassing lines of pressure. In a match these instances are inevitable and how quickly a team can recover and re adjust is truly the mark of a great defensive team.
