When looking at any concept it is important to think of how the implications of this concept impact the opponents. Cancelo playing alongside Rodri looked to overload Firmino who was responsible for covering one of the holding midfielders when they press. By forming the double pivot Firmino would then be outnumbered 2 v 1. The downside of this in the first half became the lack of passing options in the deeper wide area. This was especially apparent on the right side. Bernardo would often drop to fill this role, but with him coming deeper often in the wide area they lost his abilities going forward.

The movement of Cancelo alongside Rodri also freed up movement. Rodri was then able to drop deeper in the half space outside of the Liverpool’s block. This could either attract them furthter forward creating space between the lines and if nothing else it created stronger connections to the left side of the field.
