England’s Tactical Evolution In The Euros
The Concepts and Ideas Behind England’s Continual Improvement Throughout The Euros
Staples In The Lineup
England have looked strongest in their 4–2–3–1 and with the variability that comes with this structure it suites the players. Shaw, Maguire, Stones, and Walker have made the back four positions theirs with some contributions of Trippier and Mings as well. These four players have performed at a very high level with Pickford in goal behind them and haven’t conceded a goal thus far. For this reason and for their contributions in possession as well as transitions I expect them to clear choices to continue on.
The double pivot has been made a staple for this English side. Phillips and Rice have been playing alongside and have formed a strong partnership. Both of the have extremely high levels of versatility about them. Rice comfortable dropping outside the CBs and becoming a deeper lying play maker with Phillips then to do the job as the single pivot. When rice stays centrally Phillips can join him or jump into advanced positions between the lines playing as a threat higher up the field. In the defensive phases both players are tough and able to defend deep and track runners making late runs in behind.
